With winter on its way, it is important as ever to start thinking about your Motorcycle and its current condition. While ensuring you have carried out the necessary checks ahead of challenging weather conditions to come.
There are many ways in which you can ensure your motorcycle is prepared, safe and fit for the weather conditions ahead. Ultimately, the end goal should always be to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
To ensure your motorbike is in good working order this Winter, we have provided you with winter maintenance tips:
Ensuring your tyres are fit for riding is one of the most important things you can do. We recommend getting into the habit of checking your tires before and after every ride. Making sure you lookout for any damage/wear to the tyre as well as any pressure changes.
In relation to the tyre pressure, in the winter months, the pressure will drop around 2psi for every 10 c drop in temperature. This is something you will need to ensure you check regularly when heading out on your Motorcycle.
The dirt and salt from the wet roads can end up in parts of your Motorcycle which will result in them becoming rusty.
We advise that you start cleaning and lubricating moving parts frequently after all journeys, as this helps to ensure that dirt and salt are removed from the parts, and protects them from rusting.
We advise that you regularly lubricate these parts to ensure smooth running. This would include: brakes, pedals and throttle control.
Keeping your motorcycle’s cooling system filled with quality coolant/antifreeze will be pivotal during the colder months ahead.
Don’t get caught short and remember to check and refill frequently.
A top tip is to never use only water as a replacement, as this will freeze and cause damage to your Motorcycle.
Finally, it is important that you consider softening your Motorcycle suspension for winter riding.
If your Suspension is kept firm throughout the winter, then this can reduce the grip in slippery conditions causing it to become more dangerous.
Unlike having a softer suspension which will ensure that you feel the road grip levels more accurately.
